Sign of the Times
The task was to create a set of photographs that would contribute to a coherent theme or story. Initially I started the project with a different topic in mind, that being photography that showcased places that weren't intended to be lingered on.
As I worked on collecting photos for this initial idea I came to a realization that I was utterly surrounded by exit signs. The Center for Visual Arts - the campus where nearly the entirety of my BFA classes took place - is teeming with them. The CVA is also a building I've long loved and hated - it is, frankly, ridiculous, but in a way that only those who spent significant time there would notice.
I found myself almost confronted by these exit signs. I am a deeply sentimental person and my graduation came to me quicker than I had expected. It may sound silly, but it was as if the very architecture itself was encouraging my flight from the nest. To meditate on my time spent there, on what I had learned, and on my new beginnings.
To exit.
My topic was a goodbye to the building that I had spent the past several years of my life learning and growing in.
